LEAN CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES (LCP®)
LEAN Hit and Miss
Creating Task Flow in LEAN construction Operations
This is a very simple technique which like many of the LCP initiatives is easy to apply , yields a highly visible result - and can be very powerful. Most projects should - or already run the weekly site meeting to include programme review. Programming on Projects is best managed at different levels
This is usually done a three key programme levels.
1) The Whole Project programme view
2) A intermediate look-a-head view - say 3 month
3) and finally a short term - detailed task view for site - usually two weeks.
The Question raised is - "what hope have the team in delivering the whole project promise date if the short term programme consistently fails to deliver the promise"? This initiative is about CREATING FLOW at this level. In order to improve this flow and give the team instant feedback on performance it is essential to reviview the previous weeks programme on what was actually delivered. "Was the task finished on the day that we said - one week ago"? The focus on finish time is essential to starting the next task - did the "baton" get handed over to the next runner in a seamless movement - as in a relay race? The consequence of not achieving this in a four person relay race is obvious - you won't win. Just so for a construction project. If it did it gets a tick - if not a miss. Add up the hits and miss numbers and express as a percentage. Easy?
Astonishingly - we generaly only achieve 47% "hits" in practice! Getting this towards 70% will generate a programme delivery team that is 50% more effective. This is demonstrated by the chart shown below taken from a project run of six month.

The tasks that have missed the promise date can then be capture in a simple "cause" chart. This is done using a dozen common items. The results of this are shown HERE in the Root Cause Analysis section.
